Social media took a long time to be a reality, long after the birth of the dotcom era. This is partly because computers and the internet mainly had professional use. Besides, desktop computers were quite sacred and mainly appeared in offices and home study rooms. The invention of the smartphone brought the idea of social media into reality.

Other than being a place to share content, some social media platforms have occupied specific niches (LinkedIn is known to be dominated by professionals).

Twitter is the second largest social network albeit with a smaller user base of 300 million people, mainly young adults aged between 20 to 35 years. Politicians seem to love Twitter, but a huge number of Twitter users are educated youngsters looking for serious topics on which they can contribute their views.
